ETHNOGRAPHY

All of the toponyms in Kalbajar are of Turkic origin. Names of several ancient Turkic tribes live in these toponyms today. We can show the following names of mountains, valleys, arable lands, haylands – toponyms of Turkic origin: Ayrim valley (the region where the Ayrims lived) surrounding nearly 20 villages, Gilinjlilar region surrounding nearly 10 villages, Alkhasli surrounding 6-7 villages, Garajanli surrounding 4 villages, as well as Chirag (Chirag tribe), Jomard, Chorman, Tirkeshevand (Turkeshkand), Ganlikand, Asrik, Chovdar, Takagaya, Barmag (Bermek), Guzeychirkin (guzes, oghuzes), Bozlu, Ayrim, Abdullaushagi (Abdallar), Zulfugarli, Kechiligaya, Bashlibel, Garaguney, Chapli (Chapni tribe), Zar, Zivel, Yanshag, Soyudlar (we call as Seyids) and several other dwelling places, Chichakli, Soyudlu, Gazikhanli, Abdal, Garakhanli, Baghirkhan, Takhta and other tables , Garamanli, Khandak, Guzdak, Talalar, Alulug, Guturlu (we use as Goturlu), Tartar, Dalidagh, Keyti, Tamasha, Gochdash, Dikyurd, Yellija, Aydoghan, Goshgar and etc.
It is supposed that Aghdaban village bears the name of ancient alban tribe , as well. It is also supposed that the name Aghdavan (Agh duman) is one of the distorted names of “Alban”, such as Aghuan, Aluan, Aghvan, Andan.
Beginning from the 21st century periodical displacement of oghuz Turks took place because of several historical reasons, attacks of foreign aggressors. Therefore, several tribes have perpetuated their names in the territories of neighboring states and that’s why one can meet with the toponyms in Kalbajar in other regions of the country, as well as in the territories of neighboring states.
Kalbajarians possess written information about the origin and dwellings of their ancestors. They say, their origin is mainly connected with lowland and mountainous Karabagh, Southern Azerbaijan, Zangazur, Daralayaz, Gazakh-Tovuz and etc. and the most ancient origin is from Southern Azerbaijan.
